Laura Helbling, LCSW
I help men who struggle with burnout and self-criticism to feel grounded, confident, and free.
Who I Work With
Do you find yourself thinking:
- From the outside, everything looks great… but honestly, I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water.
- I don’t really know how to slow down. When I try to relax, I just feel restless or guilty, so I keep myself busy instead.
- I feel this pressure to be perfect all the time, like I can’t afford to mess up.
- You don’t have to worry about me. I’ll make it work. I always do.
- It’s hard for me to let go of control. I’m scared that if I don’t do it myself, it won’t be good enough.
- Even when I do well, this voice says it’s still not enough. Like I should be doing more.
Many of the men I work with feel lost when it comes to burnout, depression, anxiety, stress, and their emotions. They try to “shut it down” with self-criticism, logic, workouts, achievements, and even substances, but the relief is mostly temporary. It’s like a never-ending game of wack-a-mole (where the moles are your symptoms and the mallet is whatever you’re using lately to get rid of it).
I work with men in Denver experiencing anxiety, depression and burnout. I have two offices in Denver, City Park West and near Cherry Creek.
Here’s what you can expect from therapy with me:
- Tangible, evidence-based skills to help you manage emotions, tolerate stress, and communicate more effectively
- A teammate in exploring your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations
- Freedom from harmful beliefs, narratives, and pain
- A supportive, curious, and judgment-free space
- Guidance in building a stronger sense of self-worth, self-respect, and self-love
- Some humor! This work can be heavy, and laughter is sometimes what we need
My Work
Maybe you feel exhausted, like you’re always in “go mode” and unable to truly relax. Maybe it feels easy to be hard on yourself and hard to be easy on yourself. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out alone either. Through genuine connection, honesty, and trust, we’ll work to understand your inner critic, learn skills to prevent burnout, find true relaxation, and build a life with more ease.
My therapeutic style is playful and compassionate. I value both bravery and safety in the therapy room, so you can expect me to check in often, be gentle in my communication, and offer honest and thoughtful feedback. You can also expect to be met without judgment—after all, we’re all simply doing our best to navigate the complexities of being human.
I provide Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT therapy in Denver. I also integrate parts work, somatic therapy, and guided meditation to deepen insight and support healing. DBT is a behavioral therapy that focuses more on the present moment and building skills to tolerate distress, manage emotions, and communicate with others in our day-to-day lives. Parts work and somatic therapy may be a good fit for those who prefer a more creative and reflective process, and can be transformative for those who live with trauma-related conditions or experience strong internal conflict and shame.
Who I Am
I grew up in Maryland and then Brussels, Belgium, before coming back to Maryland for my higher education. I moved to Denver in May of 2024 and have since enjoyed spending time in the comedy and dance community here. Humor, joy, and connection are important to me, so while I take my work very seriously, I tend to my personal life with a sense of levity.
